L.O.1: Evaluate current debates on the sociological and socio-legal theories and concepts of childhood and children’s rights in relation to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child

Instructions for Blog 1:

Examine the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and its legal implementation in your own country. Evaluate current debates and theories on the sociological perception of children and childhood.

Possible plan:

The following is one way you could consider addressing and presenting this Blog. Remember it is always advisable to use the words from the instructions or learning outcome to make your point explicit and clear to the reader.

Always start with an Introduction where you briefly discuss what the blog is about and the order this will take.

In the first section about the UNCRC articles and how they link to legislation:

Introduce and discuss the UNCRC- explain what it is. Perhaps add a video clip?

One way to discuss/examine the links between the articles and legislature is through use of the 3Ps (reference this). It is wise to identify specific articles and discuss (and evaluate) them with regard to how they link to (and overlap) with specific legislation.Of course all key points here must be referenced and on the Reading List and in the Learning Materials (Units) there are many sources to help you.

In the second part about the debates and theories of the sociological perception of children and childhood it is important that you discuss the difficulties of defining the terms children and childhood and use references from wide reading (and learning materials) to help here.

You should also offer clear explanations of each of the different perspectives define and reference them and use your own words to show your understanding of these and how they affect the perception of children childhood and rights.

Then continue to discuss how these perspectives influence the way children and childhood is understood by society and in turn may influence how the UNCRC is put into legislation (and practice).

Brief conclusion of the blog at the end.

Throughout you are expected to support all points and discussion with relevant references using the ECS Reference guide to help you be accurate here. A reference list should be included (and may be linked as an attachment too).

Learning Outcome 2: Articulate how relevant legislation and codes of practice impact the varied childhoods experienced by children in the minority and the majority world

Blog 2 instructions:

Explore how the UNCRC is embedded in the curriculum framework both locally and globally. (SO TWO COUNTRIES)

Possible plan:

The following is one way you could consider addressing and presenting this Blog. Remember it is always advisable to use the words from the instructions or learning outcome to make your point explicit and clear to the reader.

Always start with an Introduction where you briefly discuss what the blog is about and the order this will take. Make sure you introduce the second country/early years curriculum here.

First section:

You need to show clearly and fully how specific rights (articles) and principles from the UNCRC are included in the curriculum guidance and other legislations and codes of practice.

Discuss and explain how these rights influence practice and how they may IMPACT children’s varied experiences of childhood; (discuss what childhood is like for the children.)

Perhaps have a critical evaluative discussion and consider how effective these rights actually are in practice for children. Such arguments can develop critical thinking and so achieve higher marks!

You MUST cover both the EYFS and another international Early Years curriculum.
You could do one at a time or you could discuss the similarities and differences as you go along (this may be more critical in style).

Brief conclusion of the blog at the end.
